September Wrap Up

clintsword

(Clint with the Sword after the Lighthouse Tournament)

September was yet another busy month for our Academy, starting with the seminar by Grand Master Hae Man Park on the 8th which was well attended and a great success. (Read report below)

The Rockingham club had a grading on the 20th, well done to Sharon and Chris in preparing their students and congratulations to all that passed. Our September Raffle was also drawn and congratulations to our 1st place winner Michelle Baldwin as well as our 2nd place winner Sandy King.

That weekend saw member from our clubs scatter to all parts of Australia to compete in various tournaments ( The Light House Tournament, Nationals, The Uni Games)

The 1st was the Light House Tournament (22nd Sept.),which was in Albany and hosted by Bill Miller and Julie Reed of the Great Southern Martial Arts Academy, this was a charity event to help raise money for the families and youth of Albany that have lost loved ones to suicide.

(Volunteers from the Rawlins Academy that help out at the Albany Light House Tournament on the 22nd of September )

This was a great event as it brought the people of Albany together, as all the trophies and awards were donated by various business in Albany, it also brought the Martial Art Community of the Great Southern Region and surrounding area's together as many clubs participated or put on demonstrations and helped in some way or another. There were however some clubs that chose not to help or participate, but rather make unfounded comments about this great event, which is not what Martial Arts is about. Let's hope next year that they can grow up and work together with the Martial Art Community and make this a bigger and better event.

Our Perth clubs along with our Albany club entered 57+ competitors at these Championships which was run in two different styles, one was semi-contact (karate style) and the other full-contact (Taekwondo style), our club participated in both styles and was victorious in both.

Congratulations to all that participated and thanks to all that made the trip and supported this event, in particular to the Albany Rawlins' committee members that organised the BBQ after the Championships and to all that help run the Taekwondo side of the Tournament, especially Reggie Carson who did her best in keeping all the matches under control. Well done to Kristy and Paul, and to Clinton Norris for winning the SWORD for the best fighter of the competition in both events.

The second event was the Nationals in South Australia(23rd Sept.), which we only had one fighter (Brodie Sciberras) from WA participate, due to the State Selections being held when most of our senior coaches and fighters were away overseas' competiting at the Korean & Malaysian Open, this resulted in our fighters not qualifying for selections. Such is life. We also had 3 members from our QLD club participating (Mustaffa Olomi, Jahan Olomi and Mohammed Dean) at the end of the day the results was 1 Gold and 1 Silver, with some bad news for promising fighter Brodie Sciberras, who broke his arm in two places andcould be out of action for a year.

The third event was the Uni Games in Queensland (26th Sept.) which was attended by Sinead Smyth, Jess Jordan, Sophie Balch and Jason Rocca. Report and results of this event will follow.

Hae Man Park Seminar Report

September 8th was a very special day for many of ur members,as they had the honour and privilege to attend a seminar and train under one of the highest ranking Taekwondo Instructor in the world, and the man that is responsible for the Taeguek and black belt patterns we practice today, Grandmaster Hae Man Park.

Most black belts Instructors would have to travel to Korea and train at the Kukkiwon (World Taekwondo headquarters) to learn from this living legend, where classes would be 3-4 hour long and "only for black belts".

Thanks to the Black Swan Taekwondo Inc. that organised this seminar, both colour belts and black belts were able to train and learn from one of Taekwondo's icons, his knowledge on Taekwondo, the history, the philosophy, the various Kwans families and the meaning and applications of the different patterns, has definitely opened the eyes and minds of many of our members.

There was well over 120 students that attended both sessions, and they came from all parts of Western Australia including Esperence, Albany, Kalgoolie, Dunsbrough, Margaret River and many local clubs.

After both seminars members got to take photo's and get various items signed by Grandmaster Park, who enjoyed the whole experience. Thanks once again to the BlackSwan Inc. and it's committee members for organising this event.

August wrap up: From Albany

Members fron our Academy had yet another busy month in August with 3 tournaments and a club grading!!

The first of the events was the Dragon Martial Art Championship which was held in Albany and which saw our Albany Branch enter 6 of their best, to test and feel the water. As this was not the usual full contact Taekwondo competition that most of us are use to, instead it was continuous light contact point sparring which is interesting and something a lot of students have not participated in before.

Of the six that competed we won 6 Gold medals, well done to Kristy, Paul and Lufti in preparing the students for this event. After that was the Bunbury tournament, Queensland Open and grading on the same weekend! Phew!

The busiest weekend in August: Wrap up from Bunbury and Queensland

The second tournament was the South-West Championships which was held in Bunbury on the 24th & 25th August and saw 23 of our members take the trip down to participate in both the patterns and sparring, although the team was not as big as in previous years, a lot of our novices took the oppournatiy to put what they have learnt to the test.

The end result was 11 Golds and 12 Silvers not a bad effort, as a lot of the fighters were matched against each other and some fought in mixed weihgt divisions, thanks to Geoff Kelly for doing his best to get most of the fighters a match.

Well done to all that participated, and to Sharon Jones, Chris Edwards and Justin Blinman in coaching the players and to the support team that went down to lend a helping hand.

At the other end of Australia Mr Rawlins was conducting a seminar/grading on the 24th August in sunny Queensland and on the 25th he was busy watching and supporting his new club as they competed in the Yun Hap Championships.

Congratulations also to every one that competed in the Yun Hap Championships and did well, especially to Bilal Deen who competed in 3 different weight classes and winning 3 Gold medals.

It's good to see members from our academy making an impact around Australia and Overseas (Malaysian & Korean open) and don't forget to buy the latest Taekwondo magazine (both copies) to read more about our clubs.
