Rockingham Grading

rockingham grading

After enjoying himself in sunny Broome, Mr Rawlins was back in Perth to conduct the Rockingham branch club gradings which included 7 members that were attempting their 1st Dan black belt.

It was a good turn out of members as well as onlookers who gave support to all those going for their different belt levels but most were there to watch the black belt grading, which once again was very entertaining and those going for it did not disappoint the crowd.

(New black belts of our growing centre)

All seven passed and showed that they have the heart, spirit and mental toughness to join the elite black belts of our centres. Pocket dynamite Mckenzie Lee showed that strength is not measured by the size of the person but rather by the size of their heart, when she did everything that was asked of her and won over not only the crowd but all the black belts that were there (including Mr Rawlins & Mr Sims)

Another young lady that showed courage and determination was Nadine Venter, who after leaving our Academy came back as a black belt, but wanted to try and pass our grueling and gut busting black belt exam, which included 100 push up's & sit up's, knowledge of Korean terminology, demonstrate all the patterns, board breaking with the four basic kicks, breaking board with jumping snap kick, flying side kick, tile breaking, one step sparring, kick & self defence sparring and the 'heart breaker'- non-stop 10 min full contact sparring (no pads allowed) against 5 different black belts every 2 mins, to her credit she passed and earnt the respect of her peers.

(The happy graduates with their Instructor Sharon Jones & Chris Edwards)

Congratulations to all the colour belts that passed especially to Hayley Brandon, Jeffrey Dixon, Gillian Leopold, Michelle Baldwin,Georgia Lee, Mackenzie Lee and Nadine Venter on passing your black belt. Well done also too to Sharon & Chris in preparing all the students for their gradings.

Broome Club Turn Out In Force For Grading

broome grading

While we in Perth were experiencing heavy rain and storms, Mr Rawlins flew out to sunny Broome to enjoy the beautiful weather and warm climate for gradings. The members were happy to see him and were eager to show him what they have learnt and hopefully advance to the next belt level.

Thursday 12th June saw 50+ students turned up for the Broome grading, which also included 3 members that were going for their 1st Dan and club instructor Tony Familari who was attempting his 4th Dan test. The standard of the students was good with some outstanding performances by the yellow 3 and the white belts. All the members put extra effort into the grading because we had WIN television covering the gradings to feature as a sport story for the WIN news, so no one wanted to look bad on TV.

(Some of the white belts counting in Korean)

Congratulations to all that passed, especially to Thomas, Richard and Romani on passing their black belt exam. They will be now put on 1 year probation to help and assist around the club (which is part of the academy's criteria) before being awarded their 1st Dan certificate.

(Romani, Thomas, Richard and Mr Rawlins after the grading)

Well done and congratulations also to Broome instructor Tony Familari on passing his 4th Dan black belt. Tony has been the driving force and very instrumental in developing the Broome club to what it today. He is also well respected by allthe members as well as the town of Broome. Keep up the fantastic work Tony.

(Tony Famalari being congratulated by the boss)

Friday 13th June was the presentation and trophy night/barbeque and well over 150 people turned up to meet-and-greet and have a chat with Mr Rawlins, who said that it was great to talk to the members and their families in a casual and tropical surroundings. Thanks to everyone that made the night a success, however everyone had to rush home to see themselves on WIN television, which did a major sport story on the club and the grading.

Saturday evening the senior members did a training session on the lawn area overlooking Cable Beach, which attracted many onlookers and tourists taking pictures. It was great public exposure for the club. After the training session the students watched the sun set over the beach and enjoyed a beautiful dinner. Life's good. Unfortunately poor old Mr Rawlins had to head back home on Monday to the cold, wet and miserable weather we were having back in Perth.

For many of our members this was the first championships they have competed in, wheather it was in the poomsae or sparring, and the comments from those who were there as well as their parents and supporters that came to watch was "how dominating our club was."

Mr Rawlins in particular was very, very proud of his students (so proud that you could not wipe the smile off his face) everyone performed to the best of their ability. He also gave praises to their coaches who did a fantastic job in getting all the members ready for the States, parents and supporters that stuck around until the very end to watch and support our last fighter. This is something that is noticed and admired by many other clubs and their instructors.

There were some outstanding performances by our members with many winning by finishing their matches with 7 point leads and some even drawing the matches out so they could stay out there longer. Some of the matches did not go our way, but that's the nature of the sport. You win some you lose some.

With 56 gold, 22 silver and a heap of bronzes, overall it was a fantastic result for our centres and just goes to show you the strength and quality of our clubs and the dedication of our instructors. Congratulations to all that competed and it does not matter if you won or lost, you are all champions and you can be proud of yourselves for getting out there and having a go just like the club is proud of you.

Poomsae Success At The States Titles

WOW!!!! What a great result after the first day of competition at the State Championships.

poomsae at the states

(Coaches and poomsae competitors after the first day of State Championships)

We had 28 members, many for the first time, try their skills in the poomsae competition (individual, teams and family) and what a fantastic result we achieved. At the end of day 1 at the State Titles we walked away with 20 Golds, 6 silvers and 1 bronze. It is an excellent result considering some of our members were competiting against each other in the same divisions.

(Winners are grinners)

(Smile Julia you just won gold)

There was many outstanding performances with the rewards of your hard work and practice paying off, the Jansen family showed that Taekwondo is truly a family sport by winning both their individal event as well as the family poomsae.

(The Jansen Family with the 1st place trophies)

Many of the other clubs, coaches and judges were astonished by our overall results, as we don't normally put in a team for poomsae. We are more famous for our ferocious fighting spirit in the sparring ring and you could say we have put everyone on notice, that we plan to dominate both the poomsae and sparring events.

(Poomsae competitors with their spoils from the tournament)

Well done to all poomsae competitors and their coaches. Stay tune for the sparring report.

Fantastic Results From Queensland

queensland

(Competitors in the Queensland tournament with their coach Haris)

We did extremely well at last weekend's Tans Tournament where we took eight fighters and came home with 7 gold, 1 silver and 1 bronze medals considering the number of students we took to was small compared to the other clubs. We came first based on the number of medals won.

Here are the medal winners:

Mustafaa Olomi - Gold

Jacob White - Gold

Khaaled Olomi - Gold

Zulaikha Deen - Gold

Mousaab Houadchia - Gold

Abdullah Houadchia - Gold X 2

Zahara Bakkar - Silver

Jahan Olomi - Bronze

The best fighter of the tournament was Khaaled Olomi aka Fred who finished his first fight in 13 seconds and won his second fight by fighting smart and just by listening to his coach he won 8-1 in the third round. Well done Khaaled.

Our next tournament is on 15th June where we have 7 fighters competing and good luck to them.
