The Biggest News of 2008!

2008 will see some very exciting developments in our centres!!

Firstly we have changed our name to “Charles Rawlins Martial Arts and Taekwondo Centres,” which basically means our centres will adopt a Mixed Martial Art approach.

After very careful consideration Mr Rawlins and his senior instructors are now ready to consolidate the pioneering efforts over the last few years of cross training with various leading Martial Art Instructors from many styles, and formalise these endeavours to give YOU the students the benefits taking a Mixed Martial Arts approach.

Rest assured that Rawlins Taekwondo will still continue to be one of the leading Taekwondo schools in the country, and will keep on producing top Taekwondo exponents, but students will now have the added opportunity to also learn various forms of Mixed Martial Arts.

The world is a changing place and some changes are ugly such as the growth in knife attacks in our cities and towns, from Mixed Martial Arts approach we can equip students to better deal with it.

We at Rawlins Martial Arts & Taekwondo Centres are proud that we hold affiliated membership with Cacoy Doce Pares World Federation.

Grand Master Cacoy Canete 12th Dan (one of the few living legends still alive and still practing), teaches Eskrido which is a seamless fusion of Eskrima, Jiu-Jitsu and Judo integrated. Master Cacoy holds high ranks in Jiu-Jitsu, Aikido, Karate and Judo all of which he earned from learning directly from the Japanese Masters and of course his high rank in Eskrima.

Unlike today where people compete in Eskrima Tournament in body armour, Master Cacoy has fought without the body armour in over 100 matches and remains undefeated in full contact stick fighting.

So you start to get the picture that we are affiliated with one of the, if not best Philippines stick fighting schools in the world.

In the Philippines some 85% of the murders committed are done with the knife, so a Martial Arts developed in that country has a lot to teach us on how best to deal with these situations. We will continue to grow our affiliation by training and holding seminars with instructors and masters from the Doce Pares style.

Red belts up watch out as you will have the exciting opportunity to not only have some serious fun learning Eskrima but also stretch your learning knowledge, as you come to understand sparring with solid rattan sticks which is called “Eating sticks”.

Guiding the development of this approach will be Mr Rawlins and the senior instructors of our centres, who have for many years now remained open minded and have cross trained with many different Martial Arts styles as well as leading Instructors.

Taking a Mixed Martial Arts approach has been unfolding over many years and we think the time is now right to implement this into our centres, we will continue to grow our affiliations and connections with various Martial Artists who share our love and passion to learn and develop, and who also believe that we can all learn from one and other and that all styles have something to offer us.

The number of seminars and cross training sessions will increase as we continue to provide our students with some very exciting, challenging and cutting edge training. We will build on many of the good practises we have already established such as weapons training, integrating boxing, knees and elbows and add grappling aspects to our approach.

So be prepared for some changes and an exciting year ahead!!!!

Athlete Profile: Brandon Cooper

2007 was a busy a very good year for Brandon Cooper, he competed in and won every competition that the entered in WA, he also competed in 2 International Competitions (his first overseas trip) where he fought in the 14-17 yrs Black belt division, even though he was only a Red belt. His performance at the Korean Open and the Malaysian Open was excellent, even though he did not win a medal he won a few fights and gained a lot of experience.

He then had to prepare for his Black Belt gradings which in it's self is one of the hardest test to pass, after the 3 hours of testing which included doing 100 push-ups, 100 sit-ups, terminology, patterns, board breaking, tile breaking, self defence, flying side kicks and the gruelling 10 minutes of full contact free sparring against some of the best Black Belt in the Academy.

He passed his Black Belt and to top it off at the end of year awards night he was named Best colour Belt for 2007.

Well done Brandon, we look forward to big things from you in 2008.
