Good Luck Sydney Competitors

Good luck to Lachlan Cooke, Hayley Brandon, Jessica Quin-Conroy, Dinah Quin-Conroy, Shane Davey, Elyse Rowe and their coaches Sharon Jones and Chris Edwards as they head off to Sydney to compete in the National Taekwondo Championships on the 4th - 6th September. This year we are not sending a large team to the TA Nationals due to others commitments and the STA Selections Competition later in October being so close together. We wish them and our Rawlins Queensland team all the best of luck.

Cacoy Doce Pares Masters In Broome For Shinju Masturi Festival 2008

22nd to the 30th August will be very busy days for members of our centres with traditional club gradings as well as seminars and demos by World Champions and Masters in the Cacoy Doce Pares style of stick and knife fighting from the Phililipines.

This is the first time that these two well known and world renowned legendry stick fighting Masters have visited WA and it was a honour and privilege for the members of our Broome branch to train and be graded by them.

Shinju Matsuri

The Shinju Matsuri (Japanese meaning the festival of the pearl), started in 1969 as a festival that celebrates and acknowledges Broome’s distinct multicultural heritage. That heritage incorporates, Japanese, Chinese, Malay and Filipino cultures, which came to Broome to work as divers and crewmen on the vast pearling fleet along with the local Indigenous community. The ability of these groups to blend the Asian, Indigenous and European cultures and live in harmony gave us our unique and special Broome culture.

In 2008 the Shinju President Kevin Fong writes, “This years focus pays tribute to the contribution of the Filipino community past and present”.

The Shinju Matsuri Board and the Broome Martial Arts Academy sponsored Master Chuck Canete and Master John Mac of Cacoy Doce Pares to travel to Broome from the Philippines to demonstrate during the festival the Filipino Martial Arts and to undertake seminars and training workshops in Eskrima.

Cacoy Doce Pares Demonstrations

The Filipino Masters wanted to show the audience a rounded presentation, so they may gain an appreciation for the Art as whole. Thedemonstration routine performed my Master Chuck Canete and Master John Mac:

  1. Amara – combination of strikes – warming up
  2. Pengke - Pengke – double stick displaying the coordination of left and right hands
  3. Sayaw (forms) – overview of Eskrima principles – in particular long range to close range
  4. 12 strikes of the Cacoy Doce Pares (CDP)System
  5. 12 blocks of CDP
  6. Disarms and counters
  7. 4 counter strikes
  8. Medium range multiple counters
  9. Pre arranged sparring drill – attack and defence
  10. Pinuti blade - the Cebuano fighting blade. Highlights that the Basic Eskrima fundamentals are applied to the live bladed weapon
  11. Sports Sparring – this part of the demonstration was by two students from the Broome Martial Arts Academy
  12. Eskrido demonstration – throwing techniques using Eskrima blended with Aikido, Judo, Jiu-Jitsu
  13. Controlled sparring with the application of disarming techniques
  14. Eskrido applications of close quarter sparring
  15. Pangamot - empty hand techniques from CDP A) defence against dagger attack B) Dagger snatching and C) Tapi – Tapi combination of A and B
  16. Sayaw forms using stick and dagger

During the public demonstrations, Tony Familari from the Broome Martial Arts Academy narrated the story. The narrator informed the audience that from the basics the advanced movements evolve. The masters wished that in the demonstration and the narration story what people were seeing was much more profound than just entertainment, they were witnessing an elementally integrated curriculum and programme of Cacoy Doce Pares.

Master Canete and Master Mac were in Broome for nine days and presented 6 public demonstrations to many thousands of people the majority had never heard about or seen any Eskrima. They are mighty ambassadors, the newspapers, and television and the talk of the Broome Township was about the Masters spectacular, educational and informative demonstrations of Filipino Martial Arts.

Cacoy Doce Pares Seminar

Master Chuck Canete and Master John Mac cover a range of CDP elements during the seminar, while training sessions concentrate more specially on a particular element. The seminar is outlined by the CDP Masters as a presentation of basic elements for example assault drills, strikes and blocks, counters and disarms leading to Eskrido Sparring (Eskrima, Aikido, Judo, Jiu-Jitsu integrated). The basic elements are built upon to arrive at the advanced stages of CDP. The basic elements are seen as outer layers intertwined towards the inner core of CDP, Eskrido sparring.

The Broome CDP Seminar covered:

  1. Introduction and outline – basic elements guiding the student to the inner core
  2. Amara – warm up consisting of various twirling and spinning moves, assault forms and drills
  3. Pengke - Pengke – double Olisi sticks exercises up to 12 combinations
  4. 12 Basic Strikes and Blocks of CDP
  5. 4 Counter strikes – these guide the students to understand the flow of the sticks, once the student becomes more proficient in both skill and understanding, the higher level component sees the student advance more towards setting up the opponent
  6. Counter and Disarms –  at the point where the student has reached advanced levels in the preceding basics this brings the practioners to the inner core of Eskrido Sparring principles and practise

The Broome Martial Arts Academy (BMAA) students absolutely loved the seminars and training session with the two Filipino Masters. BMAA is affiliated with Cacoy Doce Pares. Student’s comments were all very positive about the fantastic opportunity, many of the older Eskrima students simply stating “It was just such a great honour to train with the Masters”. In particular BMAA is located in a very remote province some 300kms from the nearest capital city and with not much other than long distance in between. For the younger Eskrima students their eyes were just wide open while their faces held the biggest smiles. They may just be modest old fashioned country people but they are astute in their judgements of what is of real value.

The training sessions emphasised some of the key principals of Cacoy Doce Pares, students were guided by the Masters in training to a keener level of understanding the 3Ms, Minimum Movement, Minimum Effort and Maximum Efficiency.

Masters Canete and Mac are professionals however they could not help but be touched with the audiences at the public demonstrations; the crowds showed respect, were very quiet, generally watching with wide open eyes, mouths opened and jaws dropped and applauded enthusiastically. The Masters responded leaving the stage on each occasion literally dripping sweat and adding new levels of excitement to match the appreciative audiences. The masters indicated they were also pleased with the Eskrima students, in particular that they trained regularly, are eager to learn and advance and take training very seriously and can still have serious fun while training.

While At Alexander Heights...

The black belts and red belts who were stuck in Perth had their own Modern Arnis training session which was conducted by Cameron Hubbard and Eddie Taweel on 23rd August. Check the fighting techniques section for the basic Modern Arnis strikes and blocks.

Modern Arnis Training August 2008

by Cameron Hubbard

In keeping with our commitment to develop the skills of the club's black and senior belts with cross training, a Filipino stick training session was held on Saturday 23rd August at Alexander Heights.

Those who attended refined their skills in single and double stick twirling, striking, blocking, locking, disarming and partnered sinawali drills. It was great to see some students have embraced the style as a compliment to their training and others welcomed the style as a new and exciting martial art. It must be mentioned that it appears we have some members whom are looking to be very comfortable and talented with the olisi (cane stick) in their hands, obviously dedicated practice out of class!

Modern Arnis was formed by Remy Armador Presas in the Philippines. He dedicated himself to promoting worldwide appreciation of the Filipino martial art. Also an expert in other martial arts, he incorporated the styles of Karate, Judo and Jiu-Jitsu into the traditional Arnis to develop a modern style of martial art “Modern Arnis” which has expanded all over the world today.

The Filipino martial art offers us here at Charles Rawlins Martial Arts and Taekwondo Centres, the opportunity to develop skills not widely performed in taekwondo such as close range locking, unarmed knife and stick defence and continuous counter for counter drills. It must be emphasised that the second dan and above club grading syllabus requires weaponry demonstrations and empty hand weapon defence and disarms.

STA State Championships Success

A proud Mr Rawlins with 3 of his future champions Maddy Spadaccini, Aidan Hordov and Allie Weidaman after their wins at the first Sports Taekwondo Australia WA State Championship in Perth.

young champs

Once again another fantastic result was achieved by our members on the weekend of the 16th &17th of August when Sports Taekwondo Australia (STA) WA division held their 1st State Championships. It was great to see most Head Instructor put politics & egos aside and come together as one to give their students in WA one final chance at top level competition before they head off to the TA Nationals in Sydney (September) and the STA Selection competitions in Canberra (October).

The Championships were ran over 2 days with day one being the poomsae and day two the sparring. Both events were well supervised and had the assistance of fully qualified poomsae judges and referees from TKDWA who provided their services to these Championships. Although there were a few referees and head instructors that did not take part in this event due to personal reasons. This however did not effect the Championships as the 3 major clubs in WA were present and the level of competition was very good.

Until egos, personal issues and politics are put aside in WA and Australia, Taekwondo will never grow and develop and the students (the members) are the ones who are suffering (these are my personal views). But as long as there are Competitions out there and as long as we are invited to participate, regardless of what association is hosting the event, the members from the Rawlins Academy will always accept the challenge.

(Some of our winners after the Championships)

Once again after the competition we walked away with 39 gold medals from 56 competitors, a fantastic result. Congratulations to all who competed as well as all the coaches that helped in preparing the players. Well done and thank you to all the players and the supporters that stay around till our final members had finished competiting. This is something that is admired by many clubs and their instructors. We might compete as individuals but we support each other to the end as a team.
