A Very Special Event

What is with the cake and what is everyone smiling about?

Sunday was a very happy and joyful occasion for our academy as we all joined together to celebrate the beautiful wedding of two of our favourite black belts.

Kire Dicoski married Jessicia Jordan and made her his wife on this Sunday the 26th April. Jess looked stunning and Kire scrub up alright.

The couple were married at Saint Nicholas Macedonian Orthodox Church and later exchanged their own vows to the public at the reception which was held at Mindarie Marina Function Centre. It was a fantastic ceremomy and those present thoroughly enjoyed themselves.

From all the members, their parents and the black belts from all our centres we would like to wish Jess & Kire a long and happy life together.

Grandmaster Park & Grandmaster Kwon Seminar

Mr Rawlins with Grandmaster Park

(Mr Rawlins with Grandmaster Park in 2007)

Grandmaster Park will be returning to Perth for a seminar on 2nd May 2009. When Grandmaster Park visited WA in 2007, he showed us the traditional way of doing the Taeguk poomsae and demonstrated the applications of the movements from the poomsae. He is one of the last living Grandmasters and one of the creators of the current Taeguk poomsae which is practiced all around the world.

Grandmaster Kwon will also accompany Grandmaster Park to Perth to conduct the sparring aspect of the seminar. Grandmaster Kwon is a former World Champion and many times Korean and Asian Champion. Both Grandmasters are regular instructors at Kukkiwon.

It is an opportunity of a lifetime to have two world renowned and respected 9th Dan instructors to conduct a seminar here in Perth.

Grading Week

It was grading week for most of our clubs as members were put to the test at their own clubs by Mr. Rawlins and some of his Senior Instructors.

We did not have a big central grading this time but students from as far north as Broome to down south in Albany as well as a few of our central clubs in Perth gave their best in the hope that it was good enough to pass and graduate to their next belt level. Mr. Rawlins was a busy man for that week but said he was happy with the standard of the members in our academies. "We have many students in our centres that are very good but they need to enter more competitions to test themselves against others to see how really good they are."

This year we are very fortunate to have almost 1 competition each month (see 2009 calendar), and instructors from all the Taekwondo clubs in WA should take up the oppournity to enter their students in these events. Shouldn't we be giving our members the best chance to compete against other clubs?

Returning after a successful tournament/grading/seminar with our Queensland branches, Mr. Rawlins and our members were once again into the action in a friendly competition against clubs from WA at the Oh Do Kwan Championships. This was also the first tournament of the year and our members were a little bit nervous as well as excited but were also ready to get out there and test their skills against the other clubs in WA.

We had 41 members that got divisions on the day, of that, 7 competed in poomsae from which we won 5 golds and 2 silvers.

We then had our juniors under 14yrs age group compete which we completely dominated. Most of our juniors won their fights in the first round by the 7 point gap rule and in 3 divisions, we had members from our clubs compete against each other in the finals for gold & silver. Of the 20 that competed we won 14 gold & 6 silver. The fastest fight belonged to Alyssa Kinkaid who finished her fight in 20secs!

Junior sparring winners

Then it was on to the seniors who were there from the start of the competition to support, encourage & coach both our poomsae and sparring members and in return like an unwritten rule in our academy, the juniors were there till the end to support and cheer on our senior members. They did not let us down with bad performances as they blitzed their opponents with many good fights, with some even knocking out their opponents. From the 16 divisions the seniors won 14 gold & 2 silver.

It was a good day of competition and many thanks goes to all the coaches, members, supporters and parents that stayed and cheered on our competitors till the end. Thanks to Taekwondo Oh Do Kwan for the invitation and to Chris Edwards, Brian Witcombe & Ian Sims who officiated and represented our club as judges and referees.

Rawlins Queensland Cleans Up at Queensland Open

Members from our WA branch (Nadine, Jasmine, Ondrej, Chad & Mr. Rawlins) joined forces with our Queensland club to dominate and make an impact at the 2009 Queensland Open.

From the 20 students that participated at the Open we walked away with 13 gold, 9 silver and 1 bronze. Some of our black belts competed in both junior & senior divisions. The competition was of good standard with teams from Victoria and Samoa joining the fun.

Mr. Rawlins was very impressed by the standard of the members in Queensland particularly the black belts (Robert, Allie, Mustaafa, Jacob, Renae & Lauren) and will be following their progress.

Well done to their coaches Haris Olomi and Chris Perkins in preparing them for this event as well as to our WA fighters.

We have now 3 clubs in Queensland in our ever expanding Academy.

Queensland Grading

Following on from the Queensland Open Mr. Rawlins conducted some seminars and elite training for our Queensland members which was well received.

He also held a grading whilst over there in which the Queensland members attempted to gain their next belt level, some were successful and some weren't. Ondrej Venter also sat for his second dan black belt (something he already achieved while his short tranfer to another club) again.

He wanted to prove to Mr. Rawlins and his fellow black belts (at Rawlins Taekwondo) that he had the skills, mental attitude and spirit to pass the grueling test laid down by our Academy.

All credit to him for re-sitting his second dan black belt and passing. It wasn't all comps, seminars & gradings while we were over there. We got time to do the tourist thing and enjoy ourselves there.

Enjoy some of the photos.
